Alright, so I finally got around to getting a Luxembourg passport. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, you know, since I have some Luxembourgish ancestry. It wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it’d be, so I figured I’d share my experience in case any of you are thinking about doing the same.
First off, I had to make sure all my ducks were in a row with the Luxembourg Registry. I did some digging and found out that you gotta confirm your details are all correct in their system, or get them updated if needed. That took a bit of back and forth, sending emails and making some calls, but eventually, I got confirmation that everything was good to go.
Then came the actual application. Now, there were a couple of ways to go about this. I could either go to a passport acceptance facility like a post office or a library or book an appointment at the Consulate General in New York. Because I wanted to get expert help, I chose the latter.
Making the appointment at the Consulate was a whole other process. I found out you have to schedule it via email. No online booking here, just a good old-fashioned email conversation. I sent my request, waited for a reply, and after a few exchanges, we finally settled on a date and time.
- Sent an initial email requesting an appointment.
- Received a reply with available dates and times.
- Replied back with my preferred date and time.
- Got a confirmation email with the appointment details.
In order to get my passport, I went through the website, and saw something about the “Citoyens” portal. Apparently, that’s where you’re supposed to find the procedure for requesting a biometric passport. Found it easily, and it had all the steps and requirements listed out. Made sure I had everything that is needed.
On the day of the appointment, I made my way to the Consulate. Let me tell you, it was quite the experience. The staff were professional but pretty strict about the rules. I had all my documents, photos, and the application form filled out as per the instructions on the Citoyens portal. They checked everything thoroughly.
After submitting my application, it was just a matter of waiting. They told me it would take a few weeks, and true to their word, I got a notification that my passport was ready for pickup. So I went back to the Consulate, got my new Luxembourgish passport, and that was that.
Why Get a Luxembourg Passport?
You might be wondering, why go through all this trouble? Well, aside from the ancestral connection, a Luxembourg passport is pretty powerful. Due to Luxembourg being in the European Union, I can now live in any EU country without any hassle, and also I heard about free education, that is amazing, right?
So yeah, that’s my story of getting a Luxembourg passport. It was a bit of a journey, with some bureaucratic hurdles to jump over, but in the end, I think it was worth it. If you’re considering doing the same, just be prepared for some paperwork and a bit of waiting. Good luck!
