Okay, so I recently went through the whole process of getting a driver’s license in Zimbabwe, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey. I figured I’d share my experience here, step-by-step, just in case any of you are thinking of doing the same.
First things first, I needed to get my hands on the Highway Code. You know, that little booklet that tells you all the rules of the road. I found one at a local bookstore. The test itself was alright. A bunch of multiple-choice questions about road signs, traffic laws, and all that jazz. I’d studied the Highway Code pretty thoroughly, and thankfully, it paid off. Passed the test and got my provisional driver’s license. Felt like a real milestone, you know?
Next up, the driving lessons. Now, I thought I was a pretty good driver already, but let me tell you, those instructors have a way of pointing out all your bad habits. I had a couple of different ones, and each had their own style. After a few weeks of lessons, I started to feel more confident.
Then came the big day – the road test. My heart was pounding, I won’t lie. I got to the VID, met the examiner, and off we went. We drove around town, did some parallel parking (which I nailed, by the way), and went through all the usual maneuvers. The examiner was pretty quiet, which didn’t help my nerves. But in the end, he told me I passed! What a relief!
So, after all the paperwork, the fees, and the waiting, I finally had my Class 4 driver’s license. It’s definitely not a quick process, and there were moments when I felt like giving up. If you do decide to do it in Zimbabwe, be prepared to fork out the facilitation fee. It wasn’t cheap, but hey, now I can drive legally, and that’s a pretty good feeling.
