Okay, so, I had to get a new Cambodian ID card the other day. It was a bit of a hassle, but I managed to get it done, and I want to share my experience with you guys.

First off, I heard from a friend that the system had been changing lately, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I went online and did some digging, found some recent discussions about the application form and procedure. That gave me a rough idea, but I still had questions.

I started by going to the police station in the area where I live. I had an old ID card with me, plus a copy of my birth certificate, just in case. I found out that there was a way to apply online, and that there are mobile ID card issuance services that make things a lot easier. But guess what, you can’t use the online system unless you already have a valid ID. So much for an easier application process, right? I had to do it the old-fashioned way.

The officer told me they were now using a digital system. Great, I thought, finally catching up with the times! They took my photo right there, no need for old-school passport photos. I had to give them all my details again – name, address, date of birth, you know, the usual. And, of course, fingerprints. It’s all about that biometric data now.

After I had filled out the form and had my photo and fingerprints taken, they gave me a receipt and told me to come back in a couple of weeks. I paid a small fee, which was expected. The exact amount might depend on whether it’s a new application or a renewal, and I heard it can be a little different from place to place.

Two weeks later, I went back to pick up my new ID. It was a pretty quick process. I just showed them the receipt, they checked my name, and bam, here’s my shiny new Cambodian ID card. I have to say that they are using a pretty good software solution for making these new electronic cards. I saw some of those desktop printers they use for the cards, and they look quite advanced.

Here’s what I learned from this whole experience:

  • Make sure you have all your documents in order. An old ID, birth certificate, and maybe a family book if you’re applying for a family book at the same time.
  • Be prepared to go to your local police station, even if you hear about the online system.
  • The process involves getting your photo and fingerprints taken digitally.
  • There’s a small fee involved, but it’s not a big deal.
  • It takes about two weeks to get your new ID after you apply.
  • You can enable online payment with your new ID card. What I did is log in to my online banking account and find an option that mentions “3D Secure”, “Verified by Visa”, or something like that, and then finish the register.

Overall, it wasn’t too bad. The officers were helpful, and the new digital system seems to be working well. If you need to get a new Cambodian ID card, don’t stress too much. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be good to go!
