Alright, so I tried to get my driver’s license sorted out in Lesotho online. Figured it’d be easy peasy, right? Wrong.
First, I hopped onto this website that seemed official enough. Found a big button that said, “Start My Application”. Clicked it, feeling all smart and efficient. They asked for all the usual stuff – name, address, you know the drill. Even had to mention my blood type, which I thought was a bit extra, but hey, whatever. Then they wanted to know my BAC limit for alcohol, I guess, it’s for drunk driving penalties and license suspension or fines, I just know it is 0.08%, so just fill it in.
Next, I had to say I already had a Lesotho driver’s license, which is true. This online thing is for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which lets you drive in a bunch of other countries – 150, they said. Sounds pretty useful if you’re into traveling.
So, I filled everything in, double-checked it all, and hit submit. I was expecting to get the documents instantly like the site said, but that didn’t happen. There was no download button, no email, nothing. Maybe I’m doing it wrong?
I did a bit more digging and found out that Lesotho actually prefers a physical IDP. I guess their online system isn’t fully up to speed yet. So, I’m probably going to have to go the old-fashioned route and apply in person. Not exactly what I had planned, but lesson learned, I guess.
Here’s what I’ve gathered so far:
- You need a valid Lesotho driver’s license to even start.
- The IDP is recognized in a lot of countries.
- They say you can apply online, but it might not work like you expect.
- You might still need to go the traditional way and apply in person.
Anyway, that’s my little adventure with trying to get an international driver’s permit in Lesotho. Not a total success, but hey, at least I figured out some stuff along the way. If you’re thinking of doing this, maybe just go straight to the physical application. Might save you some time and headache.
