Alright, so I’ve been meaning to get a Liberian driver’s license for a while now, and I finally got around to it. Let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey, but I managed to get it done. Here’s how it went down.

Getting Started

First things first, I had to figure out where to start. I asked around and did some digging online. Turns out, the first thing you need is a police clearance certificate. You get this from the Liberia National Police Testing and Evaluation Center. Sounded simple enough, right? Well, it was a bit of a process, but I got that certificate in hand after jumping through a few hoops.

The Driving School Hustle

Next up, I learned that you have to enroll in a driving school. I found a local one and signed up for their courses. They teach you all the basics, road signs, rules of the road – the whole nine yards. It was actually pretty informative, even though I already knew how to drive. After getting through their program, I had to take a theory test. Let me tell you, some of those road signs were tricky, but I studied up and passed it.

Doctor’s Visit

Then came the medical exam. I had to go to a clinic and get a check-up, including a vision screening. The doctor gave me the once-over, checked my eyesight, and gave me a clean bill of health. Easy peasy. They handed me some forms to fill out, mostly about my medical history, and after that, I was good to go.

Paperwork and More Paperwork

Now, this is where it got a bit more complicated. I had to collect an application form from the driver’s license office. I also needed a passport-size photo and my valid work permit. So, I went to the Bureau of Customs and Excise licensing office and filled out Form 1. I presented all my documents, hoping I didn’t miss anything. It felt like a mountain of paperwork, but I double-checked everything.

The Final Test

After submitting all that, I had to take a practical driving test. This was the real deal. I met up with an examiner, and we went out on the road. I drove around, followed all the rules, and tried to remember everything from driving school. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but I kept my cool and focused on driving safely. The examiner watched my every move, making sure I was signaling properly, checking my mirrors, and all that jazz.

After what felt like an eternity, we got back, and the examiner told me I passed! What a relief. I was so glad to have that part behind me.

Getting the License

Finally, after all that, I went back to the driver’s license office to pick up my new Liberian driver’s license. They processed my application, took my photo, and printed out the license right there. It was a great feeling to finally hold it in my hand. I was officially licensed to drive in Liberia!

So, that’s my story of getting a Liberian driver’s license. It took some time, a bit of effort, and a lot of paperwork, but I got it done. If you’re planning to drive in Liberia, just be prepared for a bit of a process, but it’s definitely doable.

Later, I found out that I could also get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Apparently, it’s a translation of your national driving license and lets you drive in other countries. Since Liberia recognizes physical IDPs, I decided to get one of those too. The process for that was way simpler. I just filled out an IDP application form, attached a copy of my Liberian license, my signature, and a color photo. Easy peasy.

Man, looking back, it was quite the adventure. But now I can drive around Liberia with no worries, and I’ve even got that IDP for when I travel elsewhere. Totally worth it!
